The precedent

Every industry gets its system of record

In 1972 five engineers left IBM because companies could not see their own numbers. Every department kept its own books and closed them overnight, so nothing could be known while it was still true. Their first product did exactly one thing — financial accounting, in real time, on one shared database. The R in SAP R/1 stood for real-time. Everything that company became over the next fifty years was built on that single module.

1972 SAP Financial accounting on one shared, real-time database Became the operating system of the enterprise
1999 Salesforce The sales pipeline, as a record nobody had to install Took the category off Siebel inside a decade
2014 Frame.io Review and approval for video, structured and shared Became production infrastructure. Adobe bought it
Now Film A production company still has no shared record of itself

You cannot put intelligence on top of a Drive folder.

This is not a craft argument. It is an operational one, and it is counted in headcount. Two companies grow their slate by the same amount. One hires ten people. The other keeps three controllers. The difference is whether the work is legible to software.

Future-ready software has a prerequisite, and every industry has had to build it before anything intelligent could stand on it. This is that prerequisite, for film.

The flow

Five functions, one record

A production company is not one business. It is five, running at once — and today not one of them can see the others.

01 Production management Who works here, who is on what, what they are paid, who reports to whom, and who is free in March Capacity
02 IP management Everything the company owns or controls — options, rights, drafts, source material, chain of title What can be sold
03 Proposal management What buyers are asking for, what has been pitched, to whom, when, and what came back Demand
04 Planning & budgeting Breakdown, schedule, cost and cashflow across the whole slate rather than one film at a time Feasibility
05 Film making Development, pre-production, production, post. The work itself — and where we started The film

Each of these exists today, in a different tool, owned by a different person, and none of them writes anything the next one can read. The value is not in any single function. It is in the record they would share.

The foundation

What a production company is, as data

Three layers. We hold the third already. The company needs all three, and they only mean anything together.

Layer 01 The organisation

Who the company is. Executives, heads of department, the producers and coordinators under them, and the contractors who arrive for eight weeks and leave. Hiring, rates, payment, availability, and who is billable to which project this month.

Layer 02 The slate, and the demand

Everything the company controls, against everything the market is asking for. On one side the projects and the rights attached to them. On the other, what buyers are commissioning this year. Matching the two is done today from memory, by whoever has been there longest.

Layer 03 The project context

Beneath the admin, the work itself: what each film actually is. Story, characters, world, and the reasoning behind every decision taken. It is the downstream material of everything the layers above organise — and the layer we built first, because it is the one nobody else has.

Development & pre-production

Nine linked surfaces that model a film, what happens to the documents you bring, and how a scene, a character and a world resolve into the visual decisions of the film.

So that creative work is the job, and film admin is not.

The horizon

Every project leaves a record of how a film was made

We think that record is the foundation for understanding audiovisual narrative in a way nothing currently does, and eventually for building things that cannot exist without it. That is the far horizon, and we hold it seriously rather than loosely. It is also why the foundation had to be built properly first, and why we have been slow in the right places.
